No more time for sightseeing in Berlin, we had a train to catch and a new city to get to! We were leaving Berlin at about 10.40 for a journey of over 6 hours to Amsterdam. Having arrived at the station in good time to get a coffee and some sandwiches for the journey we were in good spirits. But then the board showed our train had been cancelled. Not again! A quick visit to staff at information and we were told to get the train to Frankfurt airport and change there for Amsterdam. Ok, that sounds simple enough and we wouldn’t be so much later leaving. However a look at Google maps showed what a long way round this was! Further investigations via google also showed that we would have around an hour to wait in Frankfurt for the connecting train and wouldn’t be in Amsterdam until after 8.30, nearly 4 hours late. The train left the station on time though, only to sit and wait at the next station for half an hour. There was nothing we could do but sit and read, sleep, look out the window etc!! It did get a little stressful as bit by bit the train got later and later, finally getting into Frankfurt only a few minutes before the connecting train was due to leave! Like many others we were trying to get information, some of which was conflicting, so it was with some relief we found the train, which was leaving 20 minutes late. With another 3 hours or so travel still to do we were glad to find seats, unlike some others!
I sat next to a lady from Amsterdam who gave me some useful information, particularly about the best way to get to the hotel, which we knew now would be late!
We finally pitched up at the hotel at gone 9, but having successfully dealt with the tram system, thanks to the lady and a bit of help from Citymapper!!
We were tired, why I don’t know having sat in a train all day, but very hungry and just ordered a light meal from room service. Not cheap, but necessary given the circumstances!
