Our day started with a trip to the DDR museum, along with David. Albeit a small museum it told an interesting story of Berlin and life for those who lived in the east. It was interactive, and that included being able to get into a Trabant and pretend to drive with the aid of a simulator! So many of the main events of Berlin‘s recent history had occurred in our lifetime, a reminder of our age perhaps, but also how much the world has changed, sometimes for the better!
We spent longer there than we thought, so coffee was of course the next stop. We sat in a lovely sunny spot for this and decided to move onto the botanical gardens next, whilst the weather was being kind. We had looked at the forecast 😬
Berlin’s botanical gardens are said to be some of the best in the world. They are on the south west side of the city and by the time we reached them there were some large black clouds! We decided to have lunch. A shrewd move as whilst we were there the heavens opened, and by the time we had finished eating the sun was out again! The gardens did not disappoint. A large parkland area with mature trees and lots of planting from all over the world. An earlier visit would have seen a lovely display of roses, but we did benefit from the start of the autumn colours.
We also visited the glasshouses, probably the best I have ever been in. Each represented different parts of the world and different climates, and they were large!
As we left the heavens opened again and we had to take shelter for some time before we could get back to the underground station. David needed to rest his legs before tomorrow’s marathon so we went our separate ways, meeting up later with 2 of his friends for what turned out to be a highly entertaining dinner!
